Introduction

Quite simply, Notify of New is an automated file-sharing notification system. When you drop new or modified files of any type in your server directories or delete files from those directories, you can notify anyone automatically with Notify of New.

History

Necessity is the mother of invention. That statement was never more true than when Notify of New was conceived and created.

As a voiceover artist, it's my job to read scripts while recording and once done recording send the recorded file to clients via wav, mp3, aiff or similar formats. This is usually done via email if the filesize is small enough for their mailbox to handle. In cases where recording could be as long as ten minutes or more, filesizes become unmanageable via email very quickly. These larger files range anywhere from 10meg up to 25meg in size, wow!

For this reason, it's more practical to send larger files to my server for clients to retrieve at their leisure. I have several methods in place for my clients to retrieve their files; email attachments, FTP and HTTP download links.

When using the last two methods, it's always necessary to inform my clients when their files are on my server ready for retrieval. If you've been counting, this action would make it three steps to completing this process. I wanted to eliminate the last step (informing the client), so I created Notify of New.

What is Notify of New?

Notify of New works seamlessly on your server and notifies people via email regarding new, modified or deleted files of any type or of the types you choose in your server directories. It's very effective if you frequently update your software, scripts, release new music, debut new writings, etc., and feel burdened with having to notify everyone individually each time there's new or modified file types available.

How does it work?

Notify of New is easy to use and understand. You simply add recipients, directories to monitor for file types and create notifications to send via email. Notify of New scans each directory you set up at the interval you desire via Unix crontab or Windows® task^*. If any file types in your directories are new, modified or deleted, Notify of New springs into action and sends email automatically to those recipients you set up to notify.
